Corn

Corn, a member of the cereal family, is primarily used as animal feed. Additionally, it is utilized in the production of products such as flour, cornflakes, and corn syrup. Corn thrives in humid climates and grows best during warm, sunny days. Believed to have originated in the Americas, corn was introduced to Turkey in the 1600s from Egypt as "Egyptian Wheat," eventually shortened to "corn." It is mainly cultivated in the Eastern Black Sea region of Anatolia and can grow up to 4 meters tall.

Global corn production is approximately 1.1 billion tons, with the USA and China accounting for more than half of this output. Brazil follows with about 80 million tons, while EU countries produce around 65 million tons. They are followed by Ukraine (30 million tons), Argentina (25 million tons), India (24 million tons), Mexico (22 million tons), South Africa and Canada (14 million tons), and Russia (11 million tons). Turkey ranks 24th in corn production. The USA is the world's largest exporter of corn.

The USA leads in corn consumption at 302 million tons, followed by China (216 million tons), Brazil (55 million tons), Mexico (31 million tons), India (19 million tons), Japan (15 million tons), Egypt (13 million tons), and Canada (12 million tons).

In Turkey, about 6 million tons of corn are produced, with 2.5 million tons imported. The provinces of Konya (%19), Adana (%15), Mardin (%8), Osmaniye (%6), Karaman (%5), Sakarya (%5), Manisa (%5), Şanlıurfa (%4), Diyarbakır (%4), and Kahramanmaraş (%4) account for 75% of total production.
